Themes/Message of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas in a new Context


Text: The Boy in the Striped Pajamas Novel
Type of Task: Choice between a short film, song or 3D model (Linguistic, Spatial, Musical or Kinaesthetic)
Time Allowed: 2 weeks including 3 in-class sessions
Task Marks: 0-25

Task:

This assessment aims to reaffirm and build on the learning that students have discovered while studying the novel The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. It involves thematic consideration as well as the wider implications of these themes including prejudice, freedom, human rights outside of World War II and in the student's contemporary lives now.
Students are required to form groups of three students and jointly choose one of three assessment options to show their understanding and learning in this unit.

Option 1 - Students are to choose one of the main themes from The Boy in the Striped Pajamas including human rights, prejudice or freedom and create a short film on this theme. Students are to show their understanding of the novel's representation of this theme, as well as how the theme relates to World War II and to their current society in 21st Century Australia. Students should also demonstrate good literacy skills including grammar and sentence structure, along with an understanding of the conventions and expectations of the film text type. This task choice involves a lot of planning, including a plot, script, acting, costumes, setting and music.

Option 2 - Students are to choose one of the main themes from The Boy in the Striped Pajamas including human rights, prejudice or freedom and create a totally original song on this theme. Students are to show their understanding of the novel's representation of this theme, as well as how the theme relates to World War II and to their current society in 21st Century Australia. Students should also demonstrate good literacy skills including grammar and sentence structure, along with an understanding of the conventions and expectations of song, although the students are free to choose any type of music. The song must have lyrics and music, both of which will be handed in. This task choice involves a lot of planning, including detailed informative expressive lyrics, expressive and appropriate music, and an effective recording.

Option 3 - Students are to choose one of the main themes from The Boy in the Striped Pajamas including human rights, prejudice or freedom and create an original 3D symbol or model that represents this theme. This can include a carved symbol that represents peace with detailed information displayed on it, or alternatively students could create a scene from the novel which depicts this theme. Students are to show their understanding of the novel's representation of this theme, as well as how the theme relates to World War II and to their current society in 21st Century Australia. Students should also demonstrate good literacy skills including grammar and sentence structure, along with creativity in creating a model or symbol of their choice. This task choice involves some planning and considerable construction time.
